Lobbying for increased sector financing through radio and television advocacy messaging

As part of its advocacy efforts calling for the prioritisation of the Water and Environment sector in national budget and plans, UWASNET embarked on a campaign targeting key decision makers at national and district level calling for the prioritization of WASH in national plans and budgets.

With support from its partners including the Danish People’s Aid (DPA), Wateraid Uganda, Sanitation and Water for All, Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC), Uganda Sanitation and Health for All (USHA) and several other key partners, UWASNET has been able to conduct the following;

  1. Developed and aired a mini-advocacy documentary on television calling for the prioritization of WASH in national plans and budgets. The mini-documentary targeted Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MoFPED), Members of Parliament on the Natural Resources Committee, National Economy, the Budget Committee, Uganda Parliamentary Forum on WASH, Development Partners, Ministry of Water and Environment, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Education and Sports. This is part of its long-term advocacy for increased sector budget allocation to ensure that the sector achieves it mandate including the SDG 6 targets. In order to meet the set sector goals, the Water and Environment sector will need a large increase in funding—over nine times current levels.   2.   3. Development of e-banner targeting Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MoFPED), Members of Parliament on the Natural Resources Committee, National Economy, the Budget Committee, Uganda Parliamentary Forum on WASH, Development Partners, Ministry of Water and Environment, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Education and Sports with key advocacy messages calling for the prioritization of WASH.
  4. Development of comical and educational skits on WASH improvement at institutional level. This was done by Anne Kansiime, the comedian with financial support from WSSCC.  
  5. Development of an online monitoring tool documenting the contribution of CSOs to the national response to Covid-19. This is on the UWASNET website www.uwasnet.org
